The original incarnation of Deep Purple was formed in 1968 in Hertford, England as a progressive rock band. The first single the band released was a cover of the Joe South song Hush. Hush made it to #4 on the US charts that year. The next time that Deep Purple would reach the top ten in America would be five years later with their mega hit Smoke on the Water. Smoke on the Water is probably one of the most famous songs in rock history, known for its heavy guitar intro.

From 1972 until 1976 Deep Purple were in the Guinness Book of World Records as The Loudest Pop/Rock Group. They received this record when one of their performances at the Rainbow Theater in London reached 117 decibels. They continue to reach loud decibels on their tours, currently being accompanied by a concert orchestra.
