He’s a man with a mysterious background, no known birth name, birth date or origin. Leon Redbone has been making people wonder who he is for the past four decades. Once thought to be one of the many identities of Andy Kaufman or possibly Frank Zappa, to the extent that he was introduced on The Merv Griffin Show as “Andy Kaufman…. maybe or maybe not.” He was a semi-regular musical guest on Saturday Night Live throughout the late 1970’s and a frequent guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, Always wearing his trademark Panama hat, sunglasses and a black string tie.
He performs in a style reminiscent of early 1900’s, very jazz, and blues influenced. During his performances he does a lot of cover versions of songs from this time frame. Leon plays multiple instruments during his shows including, guitar, harmonica, banjo and the piano. One of his most popular performances in recent years is during the end of the movie Elf where he performs a duet with Zooey Deschanel, singing “Baby It’s Cold Outside”, while in the character of Leon the Snowman.
