Formed in 1964 in Gainsville, Florida, Lynyrd Skynyrd has gone through an extensive career full of tragedy and triumph. From 1973 to 1977, the band became a world renown rock band while incorporating their own style which would be known as Southern Rock or Country Rock. Unfortunately, at the height of their career, tragedy struck in the worst way possible. On October 20, 1977, only a couple of days after the release of their fifth studio album, a chartered jet flying the band to Louisiana would run out of fuel and crash in a forest in Mississippi. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and guitarist Steve Gaines would pass away along with back up singer Cassie Gaines. The remaining members would disband after the tragedy, and not reunite again until 1987 when Ronnie’s younger brother, Johnny would take over lead vocals. His voice sounded exactly the same as his brother. Lynyrd Skynyrd has been touring since 1987 with different line-ups made up of a core group consisting of Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bill Powel, until his passing in 2009.
