Phish is in their third year back after a five year hiatus. It started immediately after their weekend long Coventry festival in 2004. Coventry took place in the small town of Coventry, Vermont. The event was expected to have 110,000 people in attendance, but due to rain and traffic only 65,000-68,000 people actually attended the event. Due to Phish’s style of improvisational jamming, they are one of the only bands that are able to play a weekend music festival all by themselves. Unfortunately, this same style that makes them great has made it very hard for them to be a mainstream band with a good amount of radio play.
Phish is widely thought of as trying to be a newer version of the Grateful Dead and are compared to them at all times. This is due to similar fanbases that idolize the band and follow them from city to city. In 2008, Phish received the lifetime achievement award at the Jammy Awards. The Jammy Awards are an awards ceremony held for bands that are associated with live, improvisational music. Phish has released 49 albums including their live series, and traditional albums.
